Bitch Quilts - An exhibition by Amy Claire Mills
Time & Location
About the Event
Opening Night | Friday 20th November 2020 | 6pm - 8pm
Tactile, bright and playful these text-based quilts aim to deconstruct and reclaim words negatively associated with disability experience. By reclaiming and amplifying all the cliché́ and ill-informed words I am accustomed to hearing as a disabled woman, my aim is to highlight their absurdity and switch the power dynamics.
This exhibition will create a soft and safe space within which the audience can emotionally engage and breakdown their own preconceived bias. Using only recycled and reclaimed materials, every quilt contains scraps of cloth which are treasured and hold within them their own histories. ‘Bitch Quilts’ Brazenly encourages the viewer to come into a dreamy soft space and dismantle ableism.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Tuesday 17th till Sunday 29th November. Official opening night will be on the 20th November from 6pm. The artist will be in residence throughout the exhibition, making quilts within the gallery space. You are invited to come into Thirning Villa, connect with the artist and view how she creates her quilts.
